| Boys playing football at Fushë Kosovë train station, Kosovo |
Fushë Kosovë was built in 1873 under Turkish guidance, the line once stretched from the north (Mitrovicia) to Skopje in Macedonia. It was left in a decapitating situation with the Kosovan war and neglected over the years, but today Jérôme Cid a French national working as the International Relations Officer is working for a better recognition of the railways in Kosovo. The locals prefer travelling by coach across the country mainly due to the effectiveness of the bus/coach transportation system in Kosovo.
Unfortunately, due to the political debacle between Serbia and Kosovo the line no longer reaches Mitrovicia. Nonetheless, you still see passengers boarding the train at Fushë Kosovë which is a 20 minute drive from central Pristina itself. Due to the infrequency of trains passing by the station has now become a soccer ground, attracting the local youths who congregate here to socialise and organise impromptu tournaments! Football, as they say, is something for the masses to enjoy and as in many cultures across the globe the sight of the younger kids on the ‘Subs bench’ off to the right hoping to be invited to join in, is an endemic representation of modern culture everywhere! |
